At Designology, we help you understand your users by applying Human-Centered Design methods throughout the design process. The goal of human-centered design is to identify and address potential critical usability, user experience (UX), and accessibility problems throughout the design life cycle. Our goal is to apply science-based methods to improve the total user experience at any stage of the system life cycle. User experience (UX) researchers enhance user satisfaction and interaction with a product by identifying, analyzing, and prioritizing design requirements through a deep understanding of users, including their needs, values, abilities, and limitations. UX ensures that products are useful, usable, desirable, accessible, and credible.

Applying human-centered design (HCD) methods can help you build better products and ensure you won’t lose significant time and money after a product launch. In his book, Software Engineering: A Practitioner’s Approach, Robert Pressman concludes that for every dollar a company spends to fix a problem during the early stages of a design life cycle, it would cost the company $10 to $100 to fix that same problem after release. By investing in user experience on the front end, it can also help you understand why customers behave the way they do which ultimately leads to higher-converting design and marketing decisions. The business benefits of adding UX to every stage of a product development process include increased productivity, sales, revenue, conversion, retention, and satisfaction, and reduced training, support, maintenance, and development costs.

Here are a few ways we can work together.

Product evaluations

We identify critical usability, user experience, and accessibility problems throughout the design life cycle through heuristic evaluation. Heuristics are scientifically-based design rules of thumb.

We provide the following services:

  • Task analysis
  • Usability expert review
  • Accessibility audit

User experience research

We collect user data via interviews, focus groups, and remote or moderated user testing sessions. With a wide range of backgrounds and expertise, we can evaluate physical products, simulations, virtual environments, games, software applications, and websites.

We provide the following services:

  • Usability testing
  • Interviews
  • Focus groups
  • Field research
  • Scenarios
  • Storyboards
  • Personas
  • Remote usability testing
  • Moderated usability testing
  • Survey selection or development
  • Eye tracking (or other physiological data like EEG)

Training

We provide single or multi-day onsite support to build and boost user experience team practices. Technical writers and instructional designers break down product tasks and develop effective user manuals and other training material. Users don’t want use documentation associated with products. In fact, once a user accesses the Help function or opens a user manual, it means they have been unable to problem-solve on their own. Experts in a system may not be as proficient in translating step-by-step task instructions to users as someone trained in technical writing and instructional design.

We provide the following services:

  • Instructional design
  • User training (includes manuals, video)
  • Single or multi-day workshops
  • Single or multi-day support
  • One-on-one job coaching

Research

We collaborate with small businesses, academic institutions, nonprofits, and government entities as scientist-practitioners on a wide range of scientific research to advance technological innovation and applied social science theory.
